We expect to see large-scale hydrogen production around the world by 2030 and we intend to be part of that.

There is a growing demand for safe, clean, affordable and reliable energy that contributes to global decarbonisation. As the pioneer of the Australian LNG industry, Woodside’s experience, underpinned by strong customer relationships, positions us well for large-scale hydrogen.

We're focusing on two technologies: blue and green hydrogen. 

Blue hydrogen is made from our natural gas through the process of steam methane reforming (SMR). While CO₂ emissions are generated during SMR, we are committed to managing these through market offset or technical abatement to offer a carbon-neutral product. Green hydrogen is produced from water using renewable power.

We are progressing two renewable hydrogen projects that have been shortlisted to apply for funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).


H2TAS Overview

The proposed H2TAS project is a renewable hydrogen project located in Tasmania’s Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone, a heavy industrial precinct north of Launceston. The proposal involves a 10 MW pilot project producing 4.5 tpd of hydrogen for domestic use, targeting the transportation sector. The project’s participants are Woodside Energy (Operator) and Countrywide Renewable Energy (CRE).



The Badgingarra Renewable Hydrogen Project is a joint venture between APA Group (Operator) and Woodside Energy to be located at the Badgingarra Wind Solar Farm in Western Australia. The project will use 100% renewable power to produce hydrogen for use in power generation, transport and industrial applications. The project also provides clear longer term options for pipeline delivery of hydrogen to Perth.


We are investing in relationships and knowledge to improve our understanding of the role hydrogen can play in global decarbonisation.


Hydrogen - Izumi 2

In April 2020 Woodside announced an agreement with Japanese companies JERA Inc, Marubeni Corporation and IHI Corporation to undertake a joint study examining the large-scale export of hydrogen as ammonia for use decarbonising coal-fired power generation in Japan.



KOGAS - Hydrogen

Our investment in HyNet, a 13 -party consortium led by Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and Hyundai Motor Co. will provide valuable insight into the demand and potential for hydrogen in Korea.


Monash University

Woodside - Monash Partnership

We are investing more than A$40 million over seven years in the Woodside Monash Energy Partnership. The Partnership focuses on materials, electro-chemical and thermal chemical research relating to hydrogen and carbon abatement.



CSIRO Hydrogen RDD

Woodside sponsored CSIRO's National Hydrogen Research, Development and Demonstration report. The report explores the supporting role of RD&D across five active hydrogen industry opportunity areas.
